The Summer School ESL Program at St. Johnsbury Academy is designed to provide intensive training in spoken English, listening comprehension, reading, and writing. Classroom instruction is offered at several levels of difficulty. On the first day of the program, each student is tested to evaluate the level of his or her English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and conversation. Following this evaluation, the student will be assigned to the appropriate level of instruction.
Summer ESL classes are conducted using the same teachers, philosophy, and methodology as our regular year classes. Students participate in ESL classes for four hours each morning.
All ESL classes meet for two periods each morning. The first class period begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 10:15 a.m. After a fifteen-minute break which includes a snack, the second class period begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. After lunch students study computer applications from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
During the afternoons the activities are handled by the classroom teachers who incorporate the English skills that the students are learning with various activities which offer opportunities to practice the language while having fun.
Twice during the six-week program the parent or guardian will receive a formal report on the student's progress. Successful completion of the summer program earns one-half credit in English at St. Johnsbury Academy.
All students will take the TOEFL examination, which is offered at St. Johnsbury Academy.
