Theatre

Academy Theatre is the largest extra-curricular organization campus, with three full seasons of theatrical productions: a three-act musical in the fall, student-directed one act plays in the winter, and a drama in the spring. Through the fine Arts Department, students can also take instruction in acting and stagecraft.
Theatre
Academy Theatre is the largest extracurricular
organization on campus, with three full seasons of theatrical
productions. Students who wish to explore the crafts of acting or
stagecraft in more depth should consider the curricular courses
described below.
Introduction to Acting (Standard)
1 Credit (8821)
This
course provides students with the basic skills necessary to develop the
craft of acting. Its focus is on the myriad of techniques used by
actors in the professional theater including voice and speech work. It
will also provide students with the historical development of acting
from the theater of ancient Greece
through to modern contemporary styles. No special experience in theatre
is assumed. The course is designed to prepare students for further
participation in theatre, in both curricular and extracurricular
settings. Students will be involved in class-specific performances, and
some time outside of the normal school hours, including evenings will
be required for performances and rehearsals.
Acting I (Standard)
1 Credit (8822)
Prerequisite: by permission
Acting II (Accelerated)
1 Credit (8823)
Prerequisite: Introduction to Acting, or departmental permission
Students
will build on the acting skills developed in extracurricular settings
and the ideas introduced in the Introduction to Acting course. Work
will focus on developing objectives and the emotional language of
acting, and applying this language to the task of creating a believable
character on stage. Scene work and monologue work from both
contemporary plays and Shakespeare will be used extensively.
Experienced actors should consider signing up for this course instead
of Introduction to Acting. Acting II students will continue this work
with an additional emphasis on college audition preparation. Students
will be involved in class-specific performances, and some time outside
of the normal school hours, including evenings will be required for
performances and rehearsals.
Stagecraft I (Standard)
1 Credit (8901)
Prerequisite: by permission
Students
will explore the technical aspects of theatrical production in depth,
including design and implementation in the areas of sets, lighting,
costumes, make-up, and special effects. Students will be involved in
current extra-curricular offerings of Academy Theatre, and some time
outside of normal school hours, including evenings, will be
required.
Stagecraft II (Accelerated)
1 Credit (8902)
Prerequisite: Stagecraft I and permission
